SENIORS NEWS 19th May 2012 ROUND 6 - MATCH REPORTS SENIORS The Falcons continued to improve against Strathmore today but were unable to produce a win as they went down 3-2 in a tough and uncompromising game. Coming from 2-0 down, the Falcons showed great resilience and character to claw their way back to 2-2 but a lapse in concentration late in the game saw Strathmore prevail. The game started with the Falcons dominating possession and chances. Mo and Enzo were proving a handful up front. Enzo was dangerous with back to goal using his strength to turn his opponent inside out. Mo was confidently running at defenders and his quick feet were causing them huge headaches. However, as has happened in several games this year, the Falcons lapsed in defence and a sloppy clearance by Mika was rammed home from just outside the box. Enzo had a couple of chances to score but couldn't quite keep the ball down and Vinnie also had a shot just go over the bar. Then on 28' another defensive lapse saw two Strathmore players unmarked on the edge of the box and one of them slotted the ball past a hapless Falcons keeper. Then a break for the hard working Falcons when a shot by Enzo was blocked by a Strathmore hand and the referee didn't hesitate to point t to the spot. Enzo stepped up and scored form the spot. Enzo then again had a great chance to score from an Adrian Pizzo cross but his volley from close range went over the bar. Half time saw Strathmore lead 2-1. Straight after the break the Falcons again took the ascendancy and within minutes were awarded another penalty after Mo dribbled past 4 defenders and about to shoot into an empty goal when he was mowed down from behind. Enxo stepped up again and levelled the game at 2-2. The Falcons continued to dominate possession and a win seemed a realistic possibility but on 60' the big Strathmore striker turned brilliantly and in one motion from the edge of the box swivelled and shot low past a despairing dive from Kosta and in off the post for a 3-2 lead to the home team. The Falcons refused to buckle and continued to press. Mo again had a fantastic opportunity when played in by young Stevie but after rounding the keeper and staring at an empty net, his hot was blocked by a desperate lunging tackle by a Strathmore defender. In injury time, a rasping left foot shot from Sof whizzed past a beaten keeper but unfortunately grazed the post as well. The final whistle signalled another loss for the Falcons but overall more improvement and something to cling onto. RESERVES Report to follow. JUNIOR NEWS 15th May 2012 ROUND 6 GAMES: Sunday 20th May: U7 Gala Days as per schedule below: The U7s Gala Day schedule for 2012 can be found by clicking here. U9 Green - vs West Preston Last Sunday the U9 Green team travelled down to West Preston for the local Preston derby. The Falcons were looking to atone for the disappointing loss last week. They started brightly with numerous opportunities and were rewarded when Mitchell slotted a great solo effort. Then the Falcons fell asleep with West Preston scoring 2 goals and making the Falcons look very ordinary. Half time could not have come quick enough. Coach Tarzia delivered a stern yet inspirational half time talk which fired the young Falcons back up. The Falcons began to dominate and show their class. They soon equalised at 2-2 when Massimo slammed home a good team effort. Maya was showing continued improvement and impresses with her determination and ability to hold her own. West Preston would go on to take the lead yet again when they caught the Falcons on a fast break to make the score 3-2. The Falcons would refuse to give up and were rewarded when Massimo carved through the entire West Preston team to level the scores at 3-3. The Falcons smelt blood and continued to pile on the pressure. Thomas put the Falcons back in front with a shot that almost burst the back of the net and then Mitchell tapped in at close range after some good passing work in midfield to make the final score 5-3. It was a great win and the team played well. All players did very well and continue to improve. Well done everyone. U9 Blue - vs Whittlesea Report to follow. U12's - vs Bundoora Utd. The U12s boys continued on their winning way with a comprehensive 3-1 win over Bundoora. Having played Bundoora at home last week (another FFV fixturing quirk!) all the talk;k coming out of their camp was that they had worked our boys out and this time knew what to expect. Well that theory was blown out the window within 10 minutes as Gianni smashed a ball home from close range after good lead up work. The Falcons dominated and Chase had several opportunities but couldn't capitalise. Josh was played through and was denied a goal by the keepers legs. Edan was playing his best game for the club so far and his improvement continues. The Falcons were well served by Nathan and Luke at the back and Christian who marshaled all his defensive troops expertly. Bundoora's only threat for the half came right on half time when a thundering shot was magnificently saved by Mark who then followed it up courageously by diving at the feet of the Bundoora player about to strike the rebound. At half time the Falcons led 1-0. The second half saw the Falcons take complete control. Jack continued his form from last week torturing his opponents down the right and Jackson and Nicholas worked hard on the left. James also came on and competed really well and is slowly but surely learning his role playing well above his age. Chase was then put through by Josh and struck a fierce shot which the keeper couldn't hold and the Falcons were up 2-0. Bundoora then earned a penalty after Gianni confused his football codes and instinctively tried to mark the ball. Bundoora converted the spot kick well and the game sat at 2-1. But the Falcons killed off any doubts about the result when Jack crossed into the box after a great run and found Chase at the front post to put the ball in from close range for his second. The final whistle signalled a 3-1 win and more improvement. The project will go to tender in the near future with a potential commencement time late in 2012 (depending on the successful contractor's availability). The project is also dependent on contributions by our club and Holy Trinity ($50k) and Sport and Recreation Victoria ($100k). No word as yet from SRV but we have received positive feedback and a request for further detailed costings (which Council has provided). We are very optimistic but will need to wait and see whether we are ultimately successful with the SRV funding. Unfortunately SRV do not provide time lines as to when applicants will be advised of their success or otherwise. There will also be lighting improvements made at Hayes Park in the near future. Darebin Council's Major Projects team are firming up works scheduling and scope of works with the lighting contractor. At this stage it looks as though an additional 2 poles will be installed. We will provide further updates when more information becomes available.
